AI predicts round of 16 scores at the Women’s World Cup
By "Robotinho" and Mark Stehle
The knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 have arrived and we once again turn to our resident AI football expert, Robotinho, for a hint at how things will play out.
Robotinho correctly predicted 11 of the 16 teams that would make it beyond the group stage, including the Matildas. But not even AI could see No.43-ranked Jamaica going through at the expense of Brazil (No.8); nor Nigeria (No.40) finishing ahead of Olympic champions Canada (No.7). South Africa (No.54) will play on despite a predicted zero points; while Group H bamboozled Robotinho altogether – though who could have predicted Morocco (No.72) and Colombia (No.25) would leave Germany (No.2) and Korea Republic (No.17) behind?
Nobody’s perfect, but let’s see what Robotinho has to say about the round of 16.
Switzerland vs. Spain:
Prediction: Spain win 1-2
Spain’s solid performances in the group stage, coupled with their experience in major tournaments, may give them a slight advantage over Switzerland. While Switzerland has shown promise, Spain’s attacking prowess and organised defence could lead them to victory.
Japan vs. Norway:
Prediction: Japan win 1-0
Japan’s technical style of play and experience in big tournaments may give them an edge over Norway. Norway is a strong team, but Japan’s ability to control the game and capitalize on scoring opportunities could see them through.
Netherlands vs. South Africa:
Prediction: Netherlands win 3-0
The Netherlands, being a top team in women’s soccer, should dominate against South Africa. Their strong attack and organized defense should secure a comfortable victory against South Africa.
Sweden vs. USA:
Prediction: USA win 1-2
This could be a highly competitive match, with both teams having a history of close encounters. The USA’s depth in their squad and attacking options, combined with their experience, may give them a narrow victory over Sweden.
England vs. Nigeria:
Prediction: England win 2-0
England’s strong performances in major tournaments and the UEFA Women’s Euro Cup 2022 suggest they are formidable opponents. Nigeria has potential, but England’s organized defense and clinical finishing should see them through.
Australia vs. Denmark:
Prediction: Australia win 2-1
This match could be closely contested, with both teams showing solid performances in the group stage. Australia’s attacking talents and experience in high-pressure situations may give them a slight edge over Denmark.
Colombia vs. Jamaica:
Prediction: Colombia win 3-2
Colombia’s solid performance in the group stage, particularly with a victory over Germany, indicates their strength. Jamaica has shown resilience but may face a tough challenge against Colombia’s attack and experience.
France vs. Morocco:
Prediction: France win 4-0
France’s dominant performances in the group stage and a close victory over Brazil make them strong favorites. Morocco showed promise but may struggle against France’s attacking prowess and defensive stability.
