How this performer starts his day: ‘Scotch fillet cooked with some salt and butter’
Rob Mallett plays the title character in Elvis: A Musical Revolution. He shares his day on a plate.
8.30am Steak for breakfast. Scotch fillet cooked in the pan with some salt and butter and served with steamed green vegetables.
9am A cuppa en route to rehearsals for Elvis: A Musical Revolution.
11am A banana and a handful of nuts. I am singing and dancing all day, so water is never far away.
2pm Homemade chicken and vegetable soup. I try to eat a low-processed wholefoods diet to keep up with the job’s physical demands.
3.30pm Jerky and some veg sticks.
7pm Shepherd’s pie, a glass of wine.
9pm Cup of tea and a biscuit.
Dr Joanna McMillan says
Top marks for … Being unconventional and having steak and veg for breakfast. Delivering a good dose of protein first thing helps to curb your appetite, while the vegies add fibre and nutrients.
If you keep eating like this you’ll … Avoid the detrimental impacts of ultra-processed foods and give your body a nutrient-rich diet. For gut health, make sure you don’t overdo the meat at the expense of fibre-rich plant foods. You’d also benefit from eating a few more good fats such as those found in oily fish.
Why don’t you try … Swapping the butter for extra virgin olive oil. Add barley, lentils or beans to your soup. Dip your vegetable sticks in avocado or hummus. Include oily fish like trout, salmon, sardines or kingfish two or three times a week.
Rob Mallett plays the title character in Elvis: A Musical Revolution at the State Theatre, Sydney, from August 2 and at the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne, from September 30.
