McGowan’s Rockingham replacement chosen

By Hamish Hastie

Labor has selected its replacement candidate for former premier Mark McGowan’s ultra-safe seat of Rockingham.

The party’s administrative committee selected right faction-backed Magenta Marshall as its candidate for the Rockingham by-election on July 29 triggered by McGowan’s shock retirement last month.

Marshall is a longtime Labor strategist having worked as an electorate officer and on state and federal Labor election campaigns.

She has lived in the Rockingham area her entire life and recently purchased her first home with her husband in Waikiki.

“We love our local community and I am looking forward to the opportunity to represent Rockingham in the Roger Cook Labor Government,” she said.

Premier Roger Cook said Magenta would be a strong voice for Rockingham.

“With Magenta in the team, we’ll continue to deliver on the positive and responsible platform Western Australians voted for in 2021,” he said.

Labor is almost certain to retain Rockingham thanks to McGowan’s commanding 37.7 per cent margin driven by his 82.8 per cent primary vote in the 2021 election.

The Liberals plan on running a candidate in the by-election but are yet to settle on a candidate.
