A teenage boy has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed two members of his family, including an 11-year-old girl, at a house near Brisbane, leaving them critically injured.

Police arrested the 16-year-old after emergency services were called to a property at Normanton Close in Rosewood, Ipswich.

Responders found the 39-year-old mother and her 11-year-old daughter after the incident at the house on Thursday night, with police confirming the pair had “numerous stab wounds to the abdomen”.

The teenage boy, who police said lived at the home, was taken into custody without incident.

By Friday afternoon he had been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Detective Inspector David Briese said the woman and girl had undergone surgery for significant injuries and remained in a critical condition in hospital.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident at the property.

“One of the victims was able to call triple-zero and were able to get police there and emergency services there immediately,” Briese said.

He said another child from the family was at the property but was unharmed.

Briese said a potential weapon found at the scene was yet to be assessed by scientific officers.

He said the scene would have been confronting for first responders.

“If not for the actions of those first responders, it certainly could have been a lot worse,” he said.

Police were continuing their investigations.
