Qantas boss Alan Joyce lists Mosman mansion with $20 million guide
Outgoing Qantas boss Alan Joyce and his husband Shane Lloyd have listed their Mosman mansion with a $20 million price tag, after buying it a little over a year ago and before they even had a chance to move in.
The couple bought the trophy home for $19 million in May last year but will no longer need it after having the opportunity to buy the half-floor penthouse apartment next door to their current residence in the CBD, doubling their space in the block to a full level.
The impressive Mosman 15-room residence only recently had an internal redesign completed, and was fully furnished with custom furniture.
It was meant to be an upgrade from their place in the Harry Seidler-designed Cove Apartments building at The Rocks, which the couple bought in 2008 for $4.575 million, but the pair consolidated their existing home earlier this year when the opportunity arose.
The couple snapped up another apartment in the same complex for $9.25 million in May this year, with Joyce offloading $17 million in Qantas shares soon after.
“We were unexpectedly given the opportunity to secure the other half level apartment where we live currently. This meant we wouldn’t be moving to Mosman. We certainly wish the next owners of 12 Musgrave Street all the best in what is a stunning home,” Joyce said.
In the time since Joyce and his husband bought the Mosman pad, Qantas’ share price has jumped 17 per cent to $6.19 and the airline is expecting to post close to $2.5 billion in profits in the financial year just ended, despite the company experiencing share price turbulence since the pandemic hit three years ago.
The 1908-built Mosman home had a more substantial redesign in 2015 by US architect Paul Moon, turning the property into a three-level home with six bedrooms, formal and informal living areas, home cinema, wine cellar and a parterre garden that descends to one of the few netted harbour pools, private jetty and berth in Sydney’s harbour.
Selling agent David Gillan of Ray White Lower North Shore said a waterfront home of this calibre was extremely rare to come by in the main part of Sydney harbour.
“It’s incredibly difficult to find a waterfront home with close connection to the water that has been renovated and redesigned entirely,” Gillan said. “It’s your own netted sea pool and the jetty is a permanent boat jetty. It’s rare.
“The other thing about the house is it’s very private, very secure and very understated from the street but once you’re inside it is absolutely unbelievable.”
The home boasts a gym and a double carport, with its views overlooking Sydney Harbour one of its main drawcards.
Gillan said he has been inundated with inquiries since the home hit the market this morning.
“Whilst the market in general has had a lot of question marks over it, the top end of the market has been the constant performer over the last 12 months. It will sell well,” he said.
The home is being sold with selling agent Geoff Smith.
