‘You’ve changed my life’: Sydney syndicate wins more than $50 million in Powerball

A group of 10 people from Sydney’s inner south have pocketed $50 million from Thursday’s Powerball while a single Victorian who cannot be contacted has won the other half of the prize.

The 10 players from Rosebery North were told each person would take home a prize of more than $5 million after the $100 million Powerball jackpot was drawn on Thursday night.

One Rosebery man was watching the football when an official called him to say he won a portion of the Powerball.

“I’m in shock, you’ve changed my life,” he said. “I can’t wait to call my mum and tell her the news – she won’t believe me ... I’m going to buy a house and look after my brother and sister. They’re my priority.”

Another member of the syndicate said he was in disbelief and his wife was crying with happiness.

“I don’t have a mortgage any more and my retirement will be much easier,” he said.

In addition to winning division one, the syndicate also won division two 19 times, boosting their total win to $50,776,737.10.

The other half of the major Powerball prize is with a single Victorian who may be unaware they won $50 million as officials could not contact the person.

The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said someone’s life had just changed forever, but they might not yet have realised it.

“While the Victorian entry was purchased online, unfortunately, we don’t have their complete contact details, so we are unable to make a mind-blowing phone call to them this evening,” she said.

“That is why we are encouraging everyone in Victoria to check their entries because they may be the multimillionaire we are searching for.”

The winning numbers were 13, 7, 18,1, 23, 25 and 33 and the all-important Powerball number was 7.

Up to half of Australian adults were expected to have an entry into Thursday’s draw with 3942 tickets sold in a single minute at 1.02pm.
